IT Application for
Sustainable
Design

This module aims to introduce students to explore the latest trends of Information Technology (IT) and software applications using Building Information Modeling (BIM) as a process to propose an innovative sustainable design solution. BIM is a thriving technology and approach that is widely embraced by the Architectural, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry of different countries to achieve a highly collaborative and sustainable project delivery and design. Students are expected to explore the fundamentals and concepts of BIM and its applications in building design collaboration, coordination as well as to apply relevant tools such as Autodesk Revit, Formit Pro and Insight in order to produce an information-centric based building model and documentation which also includes environmental analysis and building performance simulations.

Collaborative BIM Project

The goal of this assignment is to expose students on how to design in a sustainable collaborative practice using methods and procedures of BIM. In this assignment students will learn to firstly (1) identify tasks, workflows, technology and other considerations involved in the planning and managing of a collaborative architectural design project, secondly (2) build collaborative and communication skills through negotiating and allocating roles, responsibilities and milestones; and thirdly (3) to evaluate and reflect on the applied strategies and team performance to draw relevant lessons about the usability of BIM in sustainable design. During the learning process, students may be exposed to various computing tools to support the design collaboration and the primary focus of this exercise is to build skills for adopting strategies of using information technologies to support collaborative work. Through this process you will be able to articulate the value and any challenges of the selected BIM approaches and use this experience to guide the sustainable project delivery in future real projects.

Building Performance Analysis Report

The assignment emphasizes the use of relevant 6D BIM-based tools to simulate, analyze and evaluate the architectural design to optimize the energy and environmental performance of the design. The nature of assignment is individual, where this case-study based exercise will be adapting the same hotel building design in the previous assignment. Students are required to analyze and evaluate the current design scheme, to assess its performance and to ultimately develop a proposal of an energy and efficient building thus reducing the climatic impact on the economy, human living, health and safety as well as its surrounding environment throughout its whole building lifecycle. Consequently, students are expected to develop their design by considering important sustainable design aspects such as site location, orientation, sun path, form and spatial arrangement and building envelope/facade strategies.
