DESIGN STUDIO.
4
In Semester 4, themed “engaging environment and community”, the studio explores design by harnessing environmental qualities and conditions for human and environment sustainability through a project with a specific community of users within a given context. The projects involve studies of precedents on design projects that are responsive to the environmental conditions and sustainable issues. Using the precedent studies, students explore the environmental poetics of the building enclosure that responds to the basic natural context such as the sun, wind, heat, cold, energy issue and existing building context (which has clustered built forms for example community center, nature appreciative center, research center). Considerations should be given to the complexity of the program, site topography and vegetation, social-cultural events, and variety of passive strategies for sustainable design. The design work should contribute to and merge harmoniously with environment and the site and provide the best of experiences for the community of users. Students are required to demonstrate applications of knowledge gained from Architecture and Environment module from prior semesters and integrate research from Asian Architecture module. The environmental elements and poetics of the context within a complex spatial typology creates a design narrative that aims to foster a sense of community.

project. 1
Design Esquisse : Food Kiosk
Project 1 deals with the understanding of materiality in relation to use and experience: Materiality is seen as a setting for communal activities to convey meaning and associations as well as a function of structure and construction. Students will be required to design a Food Kiosk, which is intended to showcase architectural form as a construct of materiality for a proposed set of activities. The exploration of themes centred around the notion of food preparation and consumption in this project will relate to the programmatic requirements in Project 2.

Contextual Design Response
Contextual Design Response establishes an understanding of the context for Project 2. Individually, students will analyse and respond to the provided data on the site and it’s immediate surrounding. Each student will identify the physical characteristics of the site which shall inform their design narratives and the formulation of their architectural project. With the site data already provided, the Contextual Design Response will produce design recommendations to initiate to Project 2, rather than simply a set of data analysis. The CDR projects including two A1 posters. The first board is a montage / collage representing the perceived physical and environmental qualities of the site and the architectural ideas extracted from these qualities. The second board is the response diagrams towards the site context.

Neighborhood Market and Food Court : Conceptual Presentation
Presentation based on the concept and design intentions which are developed from understanding of context, precedents, and program.
project. 2
Neighborhood Market and Food Court : Interim Presentation
Presentation based on the development of their design with focus on: Site and building planning, internal organization, and user experience;Construction, materiality and the quality and atmosphere of the spaces;Passive design strategies and relation to the comfort and cleanliness of the market;Elements/ design that makes the market a place for the community.

Neighborhood Market and Food Court : Final Submission and Final Presentation
The project calls for the design of a Neighbourhood Market and Food Court within a suburban neighbourhood of Seksyen 1, Bangi. Students are required to provide full design proposals incorporating findings from contextual response and precedent studies. Students will generate narratives that respond to the environment and community within the given context and explore environmental poetics of building enclosure’s design solutions that reduce environmental impact utilizing various complex typologies of spatial organisations and a variety of passive strategies for sustainable design. The design should contribute to and merge harmoniously with environment and site and provide the best of spatial experiences in fostering a sense of community. Students are required to demonstrate applications of knowledge gained from Architecture and Environment module from prior semesters and integrate research from Asian Architecture module. The final submission is including a A0 poster and slides for presentation.
