DESIGN
STUDIO.
2

This module introduces the principles and methods of analysis, abstraction, and synthesis in design thinking that are common to many design fields, including building and architecture. The key emphasis of the studio is “User and Context”, which investigates the relationship between user and natural environment. In this studio, students will undertake a series of studio-based exercises; firstly, an investigation of the architectural spaces through precedent studies; and secondly, an exploration of form and space through architectural conceptualisation. Finally, students will design a small freestanding structure that meets user requirements and engages with the site context.

project. 1

Diagramming Architectural Principles

The first assignment, students are required to ‘learn from precedents’ by interpretation and exploration of solids, planes, lines and frames in architectural design. Emphasis is given to the elements of architecture and architectonics that generate architectural form and space, produced by drawing and making. Your task is to investigate how spaces are created from the making of architectural elements: architectonics.

In this assignment, students have to form a group in six and to select one architect and serpentine gallery. For our group, we had chose Kazuyo Sejima & Ryue Nishizawa of SANAA who take over of Serpentine Gallery 2009. We had produce a complete set of architectural drawings of the selected pavilion and also models that present as diagrams of the pavilion.

Designing with Architectural Principles, Materiality and Context:Experiential Pavilion

The second assignment will challenge students to explore our conceptual and operational procedures in order to produce a significant gesture of architectural space(s). Students are required to understand the concept of simple space planning requirement your Experiential Pavilion (with a maximum volume of 30m3 ) in relations to the architectural languages from the previous assignment. Students are also required to conduct simple site analysis of the physical context both at macro and micro level of the site.

In this second assignment, we have to form 2 in a group and design a pavilion which the background is based at Putrajaya Botanical Garden. Before we really design the pavilion, we visited Putrajaya Botanical Garden for site visit. It is to collect enough and correct data so that our pavilion are including contextual concept and site response. In this project, we had chose two keywords to work on and some precedent studies were referred. The keywords are rhythm and lights and shadows. We had chose to locate the pavilion at Zone C of the botanical garden. The pavilion is in an organic form and layering techniques was used to strenghten the principles of rhythm. The materials is reflective to reflect the nature around the pavilion so that it blurs the boundaries and blends into nature,

Designing with Architectural Principles, Materiality, Context and User:The Boathouse

This final project requires students to further explore the idea of the previous assignment into a more complex program. Students are required to define a proposition for a small freestanding structure (a boathouse) in relation to the natural landscape. Emphasis is given to the interpretation and synthesis of the user, site and function in architectural design. The design of this structure must demonstrate your understanding of architectural principles, materiality and the context in creating a memorable spatial experience for the user.

This is an individual assignment. Students are to design a boathouse which will be located at Putrajaya Botanical Garden. We have to use the data that are collected in the site analysis previously during assignment 2. Same as the previous assignment, I had selected a few keywords before deisgning the boathouse which are intersection, lights and shadows and also hierarchy(of view). The minimal design is balanced with the materials chosen which is timber that add texture and warm tone to the boathouse. Different size of windows, glass panels and oculi are installed to allow lights to penetrates in and also to achieve the hierarchy of view by controlling the size and position of windows. Intersection point act the bifurcation to the other spaces in the boathouse, remain its openness but the spaces are well defined.
