COMMUNITY
SERVICE
INITIATIVE

Community Service is a form of service learning. Service learning is basically using curriculum to help foster a sense of care and concern among students for their community and the world at large. This can be at a village, an orphanage or a distant dying species. In the process of recognizing and taking steps to meet the needs of others, students will enhance our own creative, critical and reflective skills. More importantly this module will help develop our personal and social responsibility. We will learn through participating in a service experience and we will have the opportunity to use our skills and knowledge in real-life situations. We will be exposed to community needs and experience caring for another person and learn about the resources available to people for revitalizing their communities. Finally, students will have the opportunity to develop basic knowledge and skillsin community service strategies, tactics, and techniques, including the art of volunteerism.

REFLECTIVE WRITING

In Semester 4, with completing the assignment which is research writing, I would say that I was able to benefit from it by doing the research and interviews.

Our group had chosen a research topic titled ‘How the independent fashion designers in Malaysia help produce PPE for frontlines during the pandemic’. The reason we chose this topic is because the issue mentioned is happening during the pandemic and was having severe impacts on society and the economy. By not only getting all the news and updates from social media, it raises our interest to interview the fashion designers by ourselves, getting the real and direct information and expression from them.

Actually, the topic that we choose to focus on is new and trending. When we were doing the research by going through all the articles, and news, we had faced the situation of lacking information. It is because the pandemic just happened, articles haven't been accumulated and it is a very specific topic that we chose. We tried to contact the local fashion designers by using emails, instagram and also videos from the designer. We compiled a few important questions and made it into a google form to ensure the conveniency of the designers to answer. The challenges we faced for the interview part was actually the willingness of the local fashion designers to give us a response, but we actually received some different responses from the designers. With these responses, we actually understand and feel grateful.

We actually undergo a few challenges throughout this research paper writing project .But I feel that our group members are united to come over with the problems.I appreciate the work done by our group members. In retrospect of the assignment, we are able to learn and experience more from problems solving and it will definitely help us in our future study and career. I feel sorry for the frontliners who contribute themselves in the pandemic. As the articles and news are more focusing on the economics and the number of diagnoses, but the frontliners are less mentioned when they are endangered due to the shortage of PPE. I also appreciate the contributions of the fashion industry especially the independent fashion designers to help out the frontliners by using their skills and knowledge as severe impact on the economy became a force majeure for the independent fashion designers but it doesn't kill their compassion to contribute themselves.  It is a really good moral value of  being selfless, responsible as we can take and apply in our life. The project actually benefits me in a different way compared to the other assignments. It reopens my mind as I thought that a research paper will be a task for data analysis, but with the different topic we decide, it can lead us to a different direction. In conclusion, I have gained helpful experiences throughout the projects. It is one of the pretty fun but challenging assignments throughout the semester.
